Before you decide whether to move forward with a tummy tuck, it is important to understand a variety of aspects regarding the procedure, including the recovery phase. Abdominoplasty surgery is a major procedure, and it will take some time before you are back to engaging in all of your regular activities.
The exact duration of the tummy tuck recovery period varies based on several factors, including:
- The type of tummy tuck procedure performed
- Your body's unique healing ability
- Your adherence to Dr. Orringer's aftercare instructions
As a general rule, more extensive tummy tuck procedures will involve a longer recovery period than less extensive procedures such as a “mini” tummy tuck.
Immediately following your abdominoplasty, you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be monitored until the anesthesia has worn off. In most instances, Dr. Orringer will recommend that you spend at least your first night after surgery at the Serenity Aftercare Post-Surgical Facility in Santa Monica, where their staff can help facilitate your comfort and early recuperation.
Dr. Orringer recommends that you start walking the evening of your surgery. You will be able to gradually increase your activity level during the next few weeks. Dr. Orringer will monitor your recovery during this time and advise you as to when you can add new activities to your regimen.
In general, you will often be able to drive within 2 weeks of your procedure, and typically, most normal activities can be resumed after about a month. However, it is important that you refrain from strenuous activities, especially those which engage your abdominal muscles, until Dr. Orringer advises you it is safe to do so.
Early after surgery, you will often see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of your abdominal region. However, it may take up to a year before your final results are apparent.
