Pregnancy impacts your body in a variety of ways. In many instances, it can result in the stretching of abdominal muscles, making it difficult to maintain the toned, flat stomach appearance you enjoyed prior to having children. For this reason, a tummy tuck is often performed after women go through pregnancy in order to potentially reverse these issues.
While waiting until you are done having children to undergo a tummy tuck is typically considered the preferred timeline for the procedure, life events may sometimes occur unexpectedly. Even if you're confident you are done having children, it's always possible to have an unplanned pregnancy down the road. In addition, you may find that you change your mind about having additional children several years from now. These factors may result in a pregnancy following your abdominoplasty procedure. How will this impact your tummy tuck results and your future pregnancy?
It's important to understand that the chance of future pregnancies won't rule you out as a tummy tuck candidate today. While it's possible that a future pregnancy will adversely impact your abdominoplasty results, this is not a guarantee. Everyone's body responds differently to plastic surgery, and all women are impacted differently by pregnancy. If necessary, you can undergo a revision procedure in the event that you are no longer happy with your outcome after having additional children.
The bigger question involves how abdominoplasty will impact future pregnancies. Fortunately, there should be no risk to the health of you or your unborn baby if you've had a tummy tuck. In almost all instances, you should be able to enjoy a healthy pregnancy. The tightening of your abdominal muscles during abdominoplasty may cause you to experience pulling sensations as your belly grows during pregnancy. This is normal, and it is also nothing to worry about. Your baby will have plenty of room to grow inside the womb. If anything, you may benefit from a smaller baby bump.
Ultimately, the decision about when to undergo a tummy tuck is very personal. If you think it's likely that you may have more children in the future, Dr. Orringer will recommend that you wait. However, it's impossible to predict all of the twists and turns your life will take. If you're fairly confident that you are done having children, don't let the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy deter you from enjoying the beautiful appearance you desire.
