Before moving forward with breast augmentation, it is important to understand important aspects of your procedure, including the recovery process. The exact recovery time varies from patient to patient based on a variety of factors, including:
- Your body’s natural healing ability and your overall health
- Whether you underwent subglandular or submuscular breast implant placement
- Whether your procedure was an initial augmentation or a procedure involving revision of a previous augmentation
- Whether breast augmentation was performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other procedures such as breast lift or capsulectomy
- The size of the breast implant used
You will experience some swelling immediately following your breast augmentation procedure, but much of this will subside during the first month of your recovery. As with all surgical procedures, you will experience some degree of soreness after breast augmentation. Dr. Orringer will place local anesthetic at the time of surgery to help with early post-operative discomfort. He will also prescribe medication to help you manage the pain. Most patients feel that the pain has largely resolved after the first week of recovery.
Dr. Orringer encourages you to begin walking and using your arms the night of surgery. Patients are often able to engage in most normal activities by the end of the second week. However, you should refrain from exercise activities until cleared by Dr. Orringer. The implants typically settle during the first 6-12 months following surgery.
Smoking can adversely impact your recovery. The nicotine contained in cigarettes constricts blood vessels, and can result in serious healing issues. Dr. Orringer considers it very important that you refrain from smoking the month before and the month following surgery to promote optimal recovery.
