VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: A DIEP flap is a type of breast reconstruction which uses excess skin and fat of the abdominal wall tissue that would often times be discarded in a tummy tuck, to reconstruct the new breast mound.
One of the advantages of that particular technique in an appropriate patient is that it obviates the need for an implant if there's enough volume there to create a sufficiently large breast. So, while implant procedures are shorter procedures often associated with a shorter recuperative period and a shorter hospital stay, the use of one's own tissue may obviate the need for implant replacement over the course of one's life.
So, the option that is most suitable for any given patient should really be discussed in detail with her surgeon.
