Drs. Orringer and Sullivan offer an extensive range of breast reconstruction options. For the potentially most natural and durable long-term results, they recommend using tissue from the woman's own body, including the abdomen and buttock. They also perform implant reconstructions and a combination of tissue and implant reconstructions.
Breast reconstruction is an extremely important aspect of the healing process for mastectomy patients, whether in the cancer or prophylactic setting. Women from Beverly Hills, California, other areas of the country, and abroad seek the services of Dr. Orringer and Dr. Sullivan, who strive to provide care that is artistic, individualized, and compassionate.
With over 50 years of combined microsurgical experience, Dr. Orringer and Dr. Sullivan offer a microsurgical "flap-based" approach to breast reconstruction. This approach removes excess skin and fat from one area of the body, such as the abdominal wall (deep inferior epigastric perforator flap or DIEP flap) or the buttock (superior gluteal artery perforator or SGAP flap) and uses it to recreate a breast mound that tends to look, feel, and move like a natural breast. Unlike an implant reconstruction, this approach may eliminate the need for implant maintenance over the course of one's life. Additionally, flap-based procedures often improve the appearance of the area from which the tissue is taken. A DIEP flap offers many of the benefits of a tummy tuck, and an SGAP flap offers some of the benefits of a buttock lift.
Dr. Orringer and Dr. Sullivan also offer hybrid breast reconstruction, which typically uses a combination of a small breast implant and the patient's own tissue to recreate the desired breast volume and shape.
Flap-based breast reconstruction is complex surgery that requires extensive training and years of experience. Dr. Orringer and Dr. Sullivan are internationally renowned for their artistry, natural-looking results, expertise, and warm, compassionate bedside manner. They believe it is a privilege to help women reclaim a sense of wholeness after mastectomy.

A DIEP flap involves transfer of excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall, utilizing techniques of microsurgery, to create a new breast. Unlike an implant, this tissue can be sculpted and shaped.
An SGAP flap uses excess skin and fat taken from the upper buttock transferring it to the chest to form a new breast, again utilizing microsurgical techniques.
A hybrid approach commonly uses a combination of a small implant and a microsurgical flap to reconstruct a new breast.
